Congress must clarify its stand on the issue: Raja
|
CHENNAI: The Centre must bring out a White Paper on the status of the Sethusamudram project, national council secretary of the Communist Party of India, D. Raja, said here on Friday.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Raja said Congress president Sonia Gandhi must clarify her party’s stand on the issue, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the UPA Government’s stand. “Why is the Congress jittery about the project?” he asked. The AIADMK and the Bharatiya Janata Party had come together on the issue, and the Congress was feeling intimidated.
Noting that it was the BJP-led government that had initially cleared the project, he wondered why there was opposition to it now. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi should mobilise all sections that supported the project.
Fuel price hike opposed
Mr. Raja opposed any increase in prices of petroleum products. People were already suffering because of exorbitant prices of essential commodities. The duty component of the prices was quite high, and the government must first cut excise and customs duties before considering a price hike.
Opposing foreign direct investment in petroleum refineries, he said any such move would undermine the public sector, and prove detrimental to the country’s economy.
On the Sri Lankan situation, he said the Rajapaksa government had unilaterally withdrawn the ceasefire, bringing about a qualitative change in the situation. Efforts must be made to find a political solution.
