BANGALORE: Most of the India-based outsourced services industry seems to have shrugged off Thursday’s Internet hassles as something they have to live with — and overcome. And a few even see the experience as on-the-job training for many of their staff: a dry run for crisis handling. They can afford to take this sanguine view because the industry’s ‘stepney’ mentality ensured that for most mission critical communication circuits, they had an alternative route or a few spare circuits which enabled them to spread the dip in bandwidth and more or less nullify the effect. However, the capacity of a freak accident to create such a trans-national infrastructure crisis is being seen by some as an amber sign. And a few IT players The Hindu spoke to said they were considering going in for Net circuits that would steer clear of terrestrial routes. In other words, go aerial and use Internet services that harnessed the satellite route. Global companies such as Hughes have been around in India for some years, offering communication solutions that harness their own satellite chains. It will not be surprising if such players see a growth in business from IT enterprises who don’t want to put all their eggs in the same basket: they may insure themselves for the future by dividing their Net connections between cable and satellite-based services. B. Chandrasekhar, General Manager (BD), of BSNL’s Karnataka Telecom Circle, confirmed on Day Two that the snapping of the international cables has not had much adverse effect on the Nigam’s Internet services.
