Akhil qualifies for Olympics

Bangkok: Melbourne Commonwealth Games gold medallist Akhil Kumar clinched the Olympic quota, the second for India, when he outscored North Korea’s Ryom Chol Jin to make it to the final in the 54kg category, in the first Asian Olympic qualifying tournament here on Friday.

Akhil, the bantamweight pugilist, who returned after recuperating from a career-threatening wrist injury, pounded Ryom from the start before the referee stopped the contest in the third round.

In the final on Saturday, Akhil will meet the Athens Olympics silver medallist Vorapoj Petchekoon of Thailand.

The other three Indians in the semifinals, Amandeep Singh (48kg), Dinesh Kumar (81kg) and Manpreet Singh (91kg), lost their semifinal bouts and the chance to book tickets to the Beijing Games.
