City to host carrom championship
CHENNAI: After a gap of 32 years the city will play host to the senior National and inter-State carrom championship to be held from February 2 to 7 at the Nehru indoor stadium.
The event is being held as part of the silver jubilee celebration of the Chennai District Carrom Association.
In all around 600 players from 30 state units and 17 institutions are expected to take part in the championship. Prizes worth Rs. 4 lakh will be given away. Arrangements have been made to have matches on 60 boards, according to G. Vijayaraj, Organising Secretary.
He said the competitions to be held are inter-State team championships (men and women), inter-institution team championships (men and women), men’s and women’s singles as also veterans (men and women) singles.
Last year, the championship was held in Kolkata where city player B. Radhakrishnan won the men’s title and Bihar’s Reshma Kumari the women’s. Tamil Nadu won the men’s team title and Maharashtra the women’s event. — Special Correspondent
