THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Cabinet has approved the merger of the Total Sanitation and Health Mission and the Clean Kerala Mission, Minister for Local Self Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty said here. “The only difference between the two projects is that the Total Sanitation Mission covers rural areas while the Clean Kerala Mission is intended for urban centres. Since the nature of their activities is more or less the same, it results in duplication of effort and misuse of resources. By merging the two, it will be possible to monitor and improve the functioning of the mission,” a pressnote quoting the Minister said. Mr.Mohammed Kutty said the posts of employees in the two missions had been integrated. Apart from the Executive Director, there will be directors for Operations, Solid Waste Management, Liquid Waste Management and Drinking Water. Three posts of Programme Officer and two posts of Senior Consultant have also been created. The Minister recalled that the President, while inaugurating the Waste Free Kerala programme, had called on the State government to merge the two missions into one body. He said the integrated mission would help to streamline the implementation of the Waste Free Kerala project.
