Efforts to improve pass percentage

Sangareddy: The Education Department in the district which is facing a severe staff shortage is pinning its hopes on the two hours of extra coaching taken up for SSC students in Government schools to improve pass percentage.

The district which has registered an impressive pass percentage of 85 per cent during 2003-2004 academic year has slided down to almost 50 per cent in 2005 and 64 per cent in 2006.

However, the district Collector set a target of State average which is around 75 per cent for this year.

But preparation for the decisive SSC examination suffered due to lack of proper monitoring in the absence of 3 deputy DEOs, 21 Mandal educational officers and nearly 100 headmasters.

Regional Joint director Satyanarayana Reddy who has been given the extra charge of Medak in the absence of a regular District educational officer has devised a programme to overcome these hurdles.

The RJD told The Hindu that the headmasters were asked to segregate the students into two classes and concentrate on students who could pass the exam with little bit of brushing.

For this 200 Vidya volunteers from Sarvasikha Abhyan were picked up to teach the students at the welfare hostels after the school hours.

In other places, the classes would begin one hour earlier in the morning and close an hour late in the afternoon.

The students were being taught by regular staff and guest teachers on the finer points of clearing the exam.

The classes begin with analysis of previous question papers, frequently asked questions and tips of impressing the examiner with the correct answer first attitude.

These extra classes would go on till March 15.

Monitoring

The in charge DEO who has visited few schools in the Jagdevpur, Narayankhed, Ramachandrapuram mandals said that he found most of the schools starting by 9 a.m. as per the schedule.

He has asked the MEOs to visit those high schools that have no headmasters to monitor the extra classes.

He said that study material has been supplied to Telugu medium and Urdu medium schools.
