Kochi
KOCHI: Sebastian Paul, MP, said on Saturday that Kochi had the potential to become the hub of ornamental fisheries. As several academic and research institutes in fisheries were situated in Kochi, there was scope for widening the activities in the sector, he said. An oceanarium was to be set up in Kochi. He was inaugurating a seminar on ornamental fish breeding, farming and trade, organised by the State Fisheries Department and the Union Ministry of Agriculture. Innovative ideas could be employed for new projects. Singapore had employed several techniques that could be emulated. The activities in the sector needed to be taken up on a mass scale, he said. P. Prabhakaran, Principal Secretary, Department of Fisheries, said public private participation could be an ideal way to improve the sector’s performance. Dilip Kumar, Director, Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai, said ornamental fisheries played a variety of roles. Apart from aesthetic importance, it was significant as an educational tool and as a stress-buster. Promotion of tourism and empowerment of women were also associated with the sector. Communities should be involved in such projects, he said. B. Madhusoodana Kurup, Chairman of the seminar, M.N. Kutty, fisheries expert, Gayatri R. Lilley, representative of Marine Aquarium Council of Indonesia, and G. Harikumar, Director of Fisheries, spoke.
