KOCHI: The Kochi Naval Base witnessed a keenly-contested boat race organised on Saturday at the Ernakulam channel. Six teams consisting of personnel from different Naval units at the Base participated. Races were held in six categories, to enable competition among various ranks, with each team having a crew of six. They pulled away on 27-feet boats called Whalers, a test of grit and endurance. The race began from Venduruthy bridge and concluded at a distance of around 1.7 km. The ‘A’ team from INS Garuda won the regatta, while the INS Dronacharya team was declared runner-up. Vice Admiral Damle presented the Gogavari trophy to the INS Venduruthy team, for being overall first in sports in 2007. INS Dronacharya retained the best spirited trophy for the sixth consecutive year. Vice Admiral Sunil K. Damle, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, was the chief guest. The Seamanship School put up a display of water-sports activities.
