KARAIKAL: The National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme will be launched by the Puducherry government in Karaikal district in April, Collector N. Vasanthakumar, has said. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he said that one person in a family of agricultural workers would be provided casual worker job at least 100 days a year and would be paid as per the wages fixed for the agricultural workers, under the scheme. Centre’s shareThe Centre would contribute 90 per cent of the total wages and the Puducherry government, the rest. PanelDr. Vasanthakumar said that he would be the district programme coordinator for the scheme and a committee of five persons, including a woman, would be formed to select the workers. Several works, including creation of new ponds, tanks, desilting of irrigation channels, laying of small roads, etc., would be taken up under the scheme.
