District administration earmarks Rs. 24 lakh for constructing eco-friendly cottages
Enjoying a ride: The newly-developed boat house on Vasalurpatti Lake in Kolli Hills. — NAMAKKAL: The tourism in Kolli Hills will soon get the much-needed fillip with the State Government agreeing in principal to provide Rs. 1 crore for various tourism development activities. The fund would be utilised mainly for creating more tourist amenities in major sightseeing spots, establishing new parks, lighting and setting up of eco-friendly green cottages in the hills, Collector G. Sundaramurthi said. A major portion of the fund, Rs. 29 lakh, would be spent for creating a children’s park and a herbal garden near the newly-established boat house in Vasalurpatti Lake. Adequate lighting would also be provided. Officials said that the tourist inflow to the hills was on rise after the creation of boating facility. The creation of more facilities would bring in a wave of new tourists to Kolli Hills, the ancient kingdom of celebrated king Valvil Ori, they said. The district administration had earmarked Rs. 24 lakh for establishing eco-friendly green cottages. A sum of Rs. 22 lakh would be spent for constructing rest rooms, toilets and creation of drinking water provisions near the famous Arapaleeshwarar Temple. BenchesA total of Rs. 10 lakh would be spent for establishing benches and lights in the gardens, garden umbrella with benches in Youth Hostel and Rose garden, the Collector said. The other works planned to be carried out with the fund included establishment of a new viewpoint, construction of waiting shed in Ettukai Amman temple, building an arch at the foothills and creation of walkway with granite stone pavement in the garden area of Cholakkadu travellers bungalow. The boost to tourism would bring in extra revenue and jobs to the tribal people living in Kolli Hills, Mr. Sundaramurthi pointed out. The district administration had also sent proposal to the Union Government seeking Rs. 5 crore more for taking up major works in the hills, officials said.
