PUDUCHERRY: The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) will launch a month-long awareness campaign on the rural employment guarantee scheme on February 5, S. Kumaraswamy, Secretary to Government, said on Saturday. The scheme, to be launched on April 1, would guarantee 100 days’ work for unemployed persons residing in rural areas. Salary would be fixed as per the Minimum Wages Act of Puducherry, Mr. Kumarasamy told reporters. Detailing the steps taken to implement the scheme in Puducherry and Karaikal, he said that as part of the programme, an information, education and communication campaign was would be launched in all village panchayats to spread awareness of the scheme. A sensitisation programme targeting members of various self-help groups was also being planned in Puducherry, he said. The DRDA had already conducted training programme for Ministers, Member of the Legislative Assembly and presidents of village panchayats in Puducherry and Karaikal regions, he said. Similar orientation programme was held for 718 ward members and 71 councillors of village and commune panchayats. Representatives of the civic bodies were briefed about the salient features of the scheme and given instruction on how to register names of the eligible family members in the scheme, he said. The village panchayat presidents have been requested to submit the list of works to be taken up in their respective jurisdiction before February 5, Mr. Kumarasamy added.
