PUDUCHERRY: The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) will soon set up a trauma care centre and burns unit as part of its expansion plans, K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, director of the institute, said on Saturday.

Presenting the annual day report at the Institute Day and graduation ceremony, Dr. Rao said steps have been taken to provide additional medical facilities at JIPMER. Besides the trauma care centre and burns unit, the Health Ministry also planned a maternity and child health block and a basic sciences block, he said.

The Department of Cardiology was the “largest” centre for implantation of pacemakers in the whole of South India, he said adding that so far the department implanted 2,254 pacemakers, Dr. Rao said.

During 2007, 255 students were admitted in various streams and the total student strength of the institute was 828. JIPMER had been chosen as one of the study centres for diploma in hearing, language and speech conducted by All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore, through virtual class room method, he said.

The institute would be able to increase the number of seats for courses at under-graduate and post-graduate level after the present expansion plans are completed. Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor J.A.K Tareen presented the scrolls to the graduates at the function.
