Sheila for proper garbage segregation

Cleanliness drive to be launched in North Campus colleges

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit

NEW DELHI: Describing scientific disposal and management of garbage as one of the most important component of the Delhi Government’s vision of making Delhi a world-class city, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday said any progress in this field could be made only if there was proper segregation at the source of garbage generation.

Ms. Dikshit, who was addressing the Eco-Club students of St. Stephen’s College after launching a cleanliness drive, also directed Secretary (Environment) of the Delhi Government to start a cleanliness drive in each college of the North Campus every week and to provide blue and green dustbins in every college to ensure proper segregation of garbage.

The Chief Minister said there were various dimensions to making Delhi a clean and green city.

Asserting that the Government alone could not deal with the issue, she said public involvement in solving issues like pollution caused by vehicular emissions, plastic bags, effluent discharge in rivers and disposal of garbage generated from homes was essential.

Green cover

Ms. Dikshit also called upon the youth to proactively participate in the Government’s Clean City Campaign. She claimed that the children have contributed a lot in extending the green cover in Delhi.

“It is the efforts of these children which have helped in a substantial increase in the green area of Delhi during the last nine years,” she asserted.

Emphasising that a clean city lay at the base of making Delhi a global city, the Chief Minister said: “We would be able to make a cleaner and greener Delhi only with constructive contribution of younger generation who would also become a role model for the entire society in this field.”
