GULBARGA: The All India Democratic Teachers’ Organisation (AIDTO) has demanded that the State Government withdraw the amendment to the rules regarding recruitment of teachers in pre-university colleges. The amendment makes it compulsory for them to have a B.Ed. degree apart from a postgraduate degree. State convener of AIDTO K. Uma in a statement issued here said that the amendment was meaningless. She wondered how it would improve the teaching abilities or quality of education. Ms. Uma said that the amendment had also made it compulsory for teachers who were already in service to pass the B.Ed. course within two years. The amendment also stated that teachers who failed to get the degree within the stipulated period would stand to lose their jobs. Ms. Uma said that this move by the Government was undemocratic and would not be accepted by the teaching community. She said that they would fight against it tooth and nail. Ms. Uma alleged that the Government had amended these rules to accommodate the interests of private B.Ed. colleges who were finding it difficult to fill up seats. She said that if the Government failed to respond to their demand, they would launch a Statewide agitation
