NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday lauded the contributions being made by the Tamil population in nurturing and developing the cultural heritage of the Capital. Speaking at Delhi Tamil Sangam on the opening day of a three-day music festival organised by Vadakku Vaasal, a Tamil magazine, she recalled the yeoman services rendered by the Tamils in the civil services and the legal profession in Delhi. She assured the Sangam president and secretary, M. N. Krishnamani and R. Mukunthan, that the request for shifting the statue of the Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar installed at West Block in R.K. Puram would be favourably considered. The Sangam in its memorandum to the Chief Minister said that the statue was installed in 1975 in a corner of open land inside the West Block. After a compound wall was erected around the West Block the statue had gone out of public view and stood uncared for and unattended. The Sangam sought permission from the Government to shift the statue from its existing spot and install it inside the Sangam premises. Vadakku Vaasal editor K. Penneswaran and Oriental Insurance Company chairman and managing director K. Raghuraman were among those who spoke at the inaugural function, followed by the vocal recital of Nithya Shree Mahadevan, eminent Carnatic musician. On Saturday, Sudha Raghunathan rendered devotional songs.
