Help stage Shakuntala, Government urged

Special Correspondent

It was first staged in 1869 by

C. Seshagiri Rao

The book has seen three re-prints in 25 years

BANGALORE: Writer and president of the Karnataka Gamaka Parishat Krishna Kolhara Kulkarni has urged the Government to facilitate the stage performance of the Kannada version of Kalidasa’s Shakuntala brought out by the Engineer-writer the late Curamari Seshagiri Rao in 1869.

Dr. Kulkarni was speaking at the release of the sixth edition of the Kannada version of the classical play published by the Karnataka Nataka Academy in association with Bhagyalakshmi Prakashana here on Saturday.

He said the late Seshagiri Rao, who was working with the then Bombay Presidency, had his formal education in Sanskrit, Marathi and English, ventured to translate the play into Kannada when Kannada literature and stage had not gained a foothold in its own land.

However, the book saw three reprints in 25 years. With the exemplary introduction by the late Mudaveedu Krishna Rao, the book drew public attention in its fourth print in 1934. Staging the first Kannada version of the play would provide new insights .i

Playwright Siddalinga Pattanashetty said that a comparative study of Seshagiri Rao’s version and the late Basappa Shastry’s version of Shakuntala would reveal interesting social and literary situation and styles.

The late Basappa Shastry’s version is written in the typical royal idiom that could be intelligent for those familiar with rhetoric. On the contrary Sheshagiri Rao’s version was in all its simplicities that could be comprehended by all, Dr. Pattanashetty said.
