Kochi: The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) proposes to revalidate the fisheries potential of the country for evolving effective fisheries management. At a press conference here on Saturday, N.G.K. Pillai, Director, CMFRI, said the fisheries resource potential of the country was last assessed in 2001. On the basis of the revalidation, it is proposed to estimate the “optimum fleet size for each major fishing harbour.” This will help the institute evolve a scientifically informed marine fisheries governance system in each maritime State. He said that yet another thrust area was the impact of climate change on marine fisheries resources. The shift in the distribution of commercially important fish species and the vulnerability of corals to seawater warming have been detected. The research on the adaptability and vulnerability of marine fish and fisheries to climate change will be strengthened to evolve a “theme plan” on mitigation strategies for the marine fisheries sector. Better optionMr. Pillai said ecosystem-based management was a better option for sustaining fisheries. It is proposed to strengthen the ecosystem analysis for recommending a shift towards ecosystem-based fisheries management. Emphasis will be given for transfer of proven technologies to fall stakeholders to ensure their livelihood. He said the valedictory function of the diamond jubilee celebrations and foundation day of the institute would be inaugurated by K.S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, on February 4.
