Equal opportunities for women mooted

Staff Correspondent

KOLAR: Kalpanadevi, former MP and Vice-President of All India Mahila Congress on Saturday said that women were poorly represented in Parliament and State legislatures. The demand for 33 per cent reservation in apex law- making bodies should continue, she said. Ms. Kalpanadevi was the chief guest at the district-level Mahila Congress convention here. Referring to women’s role in the freedom struggle, she stressed on the need for providing equal opportunities to women in all fronts, including politics. Ms. Kalpanadevi blamed the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party for the imposition of President’s rule in Karnataka.

State Mahila Congress President and former Minister Rani Sathish exhorted the men to cooperate with women to independently discharge their duties in the political arena. While emphasising on the contribution of women’s self-help groups, Ms. Sathish said there should not be misuse of these groups.
