1,300 works identified for rural job programme

DINDIGUL: A total of 1,300 works have been identified under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) for 2008-09. Approximately, 1.44 lakh families would get job opportunity. Budget at an outlay of Rs.106.51 crore for next financial year had been submitted to the Central Government, according to Collector R. Vasuki.
Speaking to reporters at the collectorate here on Saturday, she said, “the Government has sanctioned Rs.126.90 crore so far under this scheme. We have executed Rs.75 crore worth development works so far. Of the total three lakh families in the district, 2.55 lakh members from 1.94 lakh families, 59 per cent of total rural families, have registered their names under the NREGP. Wages to the tune of Rs.75.92 crore, Rs.32.82 lakh in 2005-06, Rs.21.29 crore in 2006-07 and Rs.54.29 crore in 2007-08 - had been disbursed.”
Over, 450 supply canals were rehabilitated, 122 tanks either desilted or deepened to increase its storage capacity, 35 rural wells renovated under this scheme. Besides, 479 minor irrigation works and 133 road works had also been executed.
