No bird flu in Theni
Staff Reporter
THENI: Bird flu does not prevail in the district. Samples of bird carcases, which were found at Devadhanapatti in Periakulam and Karattuppatt villages in Bodi, tested in Bhopal proved that they were not affected by bird flu and might have died of starvation, according to S. Madhan Mohan, Joint Director of Animal Husbandry.
Talking to reporters here on Saturday, he said that results of samples had reached the department. Experts in Bhopal had confirmed that chickens in these villages did not die of bird flue.
He appealed to poultry owners to check all birds in their farms. Similarly persons willing to set up new farms could purchase tested hybrid chickens by the department to prevent bird flu attack.
Hundreds of dead birds were dumped near water sources at Devadhanapatti and Karattupatti villages recently that panicked rural people about possible spread of diseases.
Veterinary officials had collected samples from dead birds and sent them for test to Bhopal. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police R. Sudhakar warned that criminal action would be initiated against poultry owners who dump dead birds on roadsides or in water sources or disposed of unsafely.
Already, the police arrested two poultry owners on the charges of disposing dead birds in an unsafe manner, he added.
