IGNOU’s regional centre inaugurated in Madurai

MADURAI: The Regional Centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was inaugurated by its Vice-Chancellor V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai at Pasumalai here on Friday.

The centre would deal with academic and administrative requirements of students belonging to 16 districts in the State and help in “capacity building and customised training,” Prof. Pillai said. The university’s student enrolment stood at over 18 lakh, with 65 per cent of them from villages.

The regional centre had been authorised to conduct courses necessary for Madurai region and there could also be capacity building programmes for primary school teachers.

P. Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University, who took part in the function, said that universities were not compromising on quality aspects of distance education courses because thousands of students depended on this stream for their higher education.

“Universities do not differentiate between regular courses and those offered under distance education mode,” he said.

Latha Pillai, Pro-Vice Chancellor, IGNOU, said that the university had entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Atomic Energy Education Society to train 1,600 teachers working in schools under the Atomic Energy Department.

Teachers were trained in integration of computer proficiency with classroom teaching.

The university had good infrastructure and human resources to offer customised courses in any part of the country.

J.P. Gabriel, Director, C.S.I. College of Education, and S. Vadivelu, Director of Distance Education, MKU, were among those present.

K. Panneerselvam, Regional Director, IGNOU, said that the upgraded centre would now be able to cater to the educational needs of all southern districts, besides Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Karur and Pudukottai.
