Scrap marks criterion for scholarships: CPI(M)

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has asked the government to withdraw its decision to impose the condition of 60 per cent marks as a criterion for eligibility for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students for post-matric scholarships in professional institutions.

Describing the decision as against the norms of social justice, the CPI (M) Polit Bureau urged the government to bring forward appropriate Central legislation to bring private institutions under social control in some key areas as fees and admissions.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, the Polit Bureau said the Union Finance Ministry and the Planning Commission which were instrumental in pushing for this decision were trying to impose their “flawed” understanding to cut subsidies, in this instance at the cost of Dalit and tribal students. The percentage of students of oppressed sections in professional institutions was already dismally low and such a decision would lead to further marginalisation.
