Ansari to inaugurate whips’ conference

Meena Menon

MUMBAI: Vice President Mohammed Hameed Ansari will inaugurate the two-day 14th All India Whips conference on Monday which will debate crucial issues related to legislative conduct and procedures.

The conference is being held in Maharashtra after 42 years, according to Harshvardhan Patil, Maharashtra Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.

130 whips expected

Mr. Patil told reporters on Saturday that about 130 whips were expected from 35 States for the conference which was being hosted by the Maharashtra legislature. The last conference was held in Hyderabad three years ago.

Key areas of discussion would be the role of whips in the context of coalitions, the increasing disruptions in Parliament and legislatures and the need for support for research and study. Under discussion would also be the need for setting aside a day in the week for discussion on burning issues or members’ issues and the introduction of information technology.
