Globstar in quarterfinals

KOCHI: Ernakulam’s Globstar Telecom, which got a lucky entry into the main phase here after a Bangalore team withdrew, stunned the star-studded BPCL, Mumbai, by five wickets and entered the quarterfinals of the 21st BPCL Kochi Refinery all-India cricket tournament here on Saturday.

BPCL, which began as the favourite as the team included five Ranji players, could not pace its innings well in the 30-over match. The Mumbai side lost just three wickets but could make only 186, a mediocre total on the small Tripunithura Palace Oval. Globstar’s big-hitter Rajilal scored 38 off just 23 balls and the fifth-wicket pair of C.M. Deepak and Pius K. Joseph scored 102 off 11 overs to help the local side win comfortably.

Four Kerala teams — SBT, Muthoot-Ernakulam CC and Ernakulam’s Cordiant Sports Foundation being the other three – entered the quarterfinals, a rare record for this tournament.

Also making the last-eight grade was Chennai’s India Cements, which defeated State Bank of Mysore by 17 runs, thanks to former Kerala skipper Sreekumar’s fine all-round performance, Indian Bank, IOB (both Chennai) and Vijaya Bank (Bangalore).

The scores (league): At BPCL Ground, Ambalamugal: BPCL Cricket Academy, Kochi 188 for five in 30 overs (K.J. Rakesh 50 n.o., Vineeth Viswanath 48) lost to Indian Bank, Chennai 192 for six in 29.3 overs (E. Suresh 76).

India Cements, Chennai 202 for seven in 30 overs (S. Suresh 89, Sreekumar Nair 45 n.o.) bt State Bank of Mysore, Bangalore 185 in 27.2 overs (M. Vijay 48, Sasikumar 47, Sreekumar Nair five for 52).

At Palace Oval, Tripunithura: BPCL, Mumbai 186 for three in 30 overs (Vinayak Mane 73, Sithansu Katak 57) lost to Globstar Telecom, Ernakulam 192 for five in 29.4 overs (C.M. Deepak 66, Pius K. Joseph 47 n.o.).

State Bank of Hyderabad 173 for eight in 30 overs (Ashish Reddy 43, Kushal Jilla 43) lost to Muthoot Ernakulam CC 177 for nine in 29.5 overs. — Principal Correspondent
