China in control after first day’s play

BEIJING: Chinese No. 2 Peng Shuai upset Virginie Razzano 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to give China a 2-0 lead in its Fed Cup World group tie against France on Saturday.

Li Na overcame a slow start in the opening match to hammer tournament debutant Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-1.

Peer beats Safina

Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv, Russian World No. 5 Maria Sharapova eased past Israeli Tzipi Obziler 6-0, 6-4 to level the scores at 1-1 in their World Group first-round tie. Israel had gone ahead in the first match of the day when Shahar Peer beat Dinara Safina 0-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The results: World Group I:

At Beijing: China leads France 2-0 (Peng Shuai bt Virginie Razzano 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; Li Na bt Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-1).

At Tel Aviv: Israel 1 Russia 1 (Shahar Peer bt Dinara Safina 0-6, 6-2, 6-2; Maria Sharapova bt Tzipi Obziler 6-0, 6-4).

World Group II:

At Hyogo (Japan): Japan 1 Croatia 1 (Aiko Nakamura lost to Jelena Kostanic Tosic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; Akiko Morigami bt Nika Ozegovic 2-6, 7-5, 6-1). — Agencies
