Orissa
Bhubaneswar: Poultry farmers in Orissa today objected to the Centre’s directive to undertake culling of chickens in states adjoining Bird flu-hit West Bengal, alleging such a step would lead to entry of diseased birds into no-bird zones as culling in affected areas was not satisfactory. Before culling in Orissa is taken up, it would be proper if West Bengal culled all the affected birds in the flu-affected areas, poultry farmers’ bodies, including the All-Orissa Broiler Association, said in memorandum to the State Government. Describing the culling of birds in flu-hit areas of West Bengal as “far from satisfactory”, they said there were villages on the border where a sizable quantity of chickens still remained. In case culling is undertaken on the Orissa side, it would lead to dispatch of affected birds into Orissa by unscrupulous traders, they alleged. They asked the Centre to provide all support to West Bengal and complete culling of birds at the earliest without thinking of “myopic” solutions like creating a no-bird zone in unaffected areas. Orissa animal husbandry and veterinary services Director B.P. Sethy, said the government was examining the Centre’s communication for culling and poultry farmers’ memorandum opposing the move. - PTI
