Remembering BhaGABati: CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat receives the torch on the occasion of Bhagabati Panigrahi’s birth centenary in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.

BHUBANESWAR: Rich tributes were paid to socialist leader and founder secretary of Orissa Unit of Communist Party Bhagabati Panigrahi here on Saturday with Left leaders calling upon cadres not to dilute the ideology the visionary leader had preached.

A torch rally, which was organised by Communist Party of India (Marxist), was taken out from party’s main office to Institute of Engineers’ building where the memorial lecture on the occasion of the birth centenary of Late Panigrahi was staged.

Describing the founder secretary of Communist Party in the State as a great socialist leader, CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat said Bhagabati Panigrahi believed that elimination of economic inequality would be true freedom even before independence.

“I am astonished that Bhagabati Panigrahi in such a young age could able to convey the ideology to masses. He was the first person who translated communist ideology into Oriya language,” Mr. Karat said.

Book released

He said the Central leadership was interested to translate Oriya script of life history of Bhagabati Panigrahi into different Indian languages for spreading his message in other regions.

State Secretary CPI (M) Janardan Pati said the founder secretary fought for the equality in society without compromising with the ideology. Bhagabati Panigrahi had never imbibed a thought of resorting to violence to achieve social change, Mr. Pati said.

A book on occasion of celebration of birth centenary of Bhagabati Panigrahi was released on the occasion. CPI (M) leader Santosh Das, CPI State Secretary Dibakar Nayak and veteran CPI (M) leader Shivaji Patnaik also spoke at the Bhagabati Panigrahi memorial lecture.
