CRIME BUSTED: C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs (Airport), having a look at the hollow leg of a cot, inside which narcotic drug packets were concealed.
CHENNAI: Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs seized four kg of Ketamine Hydrochloride from a Kuala Lumpur-bound passenger on Friday.
C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs (Airport), said Mohamed Ismail Sulthan, 38, of Chennai, was intercepted on suspicion.
A thorough examination of his checked-in baggage resulted in the seizure of the banned drug worth Rs. 40 lakh in the international market.
The passenger packed the contraband in a dozen packets and concealed them in the wooden panel, where cavities were carved, and in the hollow part of the legs of the cot.
The two pieces of baggage were handed over to him by a stranger at the airport for some monetary consideration, Mr. Rajan said. The passenger was arrested.
Ketamine export requires a no-objection certificate from the Narcotics Commissioner, Gwalior. But the passenger did not have it.
Ketamine is an anaesthetic used for human and veterinary treatment.
In the last one month alone, the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs detected three cases of smuggling of Ketamine, all valued at Rs 1.20 crore.
