TIRUCHI: As part of its community development programme, Indian Oil Corporation will construct community halls in 11 village panchayats in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts shortly, its General Manager, Southern Region, M. Nageswaran said. Handing over a cheque for Rs.10 lakh for construction of an over-head tank in Vazhavandankottai, near here, where the IOC has set up its plant, he said the IOC was committed to peripheral development and funded various schemes through its community development programmes. There was a huge demand for community halls in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts and the IOC would fund the construction of halls at 11 village panchayats. The work would be taken up shortly. IOC’s South Zone had allotted Rs.5.6 crore for community development programmes during the current financial year including Rs.1.70 crore for Tamil Nadu. Works to the tune of Rs.1.10 crore had been completed so far in Tamil Nadu. The IOC had allotted a huge sum of money and had appealed to the people to take advantage by contacting its southern regional office in Madurai. Executive Engineer of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board Pazhaniappan, who received the cheque, said the funds would also be utilised for sinking a bore-well and setting up pipelines. Village panchayat president of Vazhavandankottai Velusamy said the facility would ensure proper supply of drinking water. Deputy General Manager (Operations) A. Pandian and Chief General Manager C.M. Chandrakanthan spoke.
