Nagercoil: Southern Railway was considering electrification of the Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari railway line. Once this Rs.5-crore project was completed, there would be uninterrupted electrified route from Kanyakumari to New Delhi, said R. Velu, Union Minister of State for Railways, here on Friday. Flagging off the Nagercoil-Coimbatore express, Mr. Velu said that a feasibility study was under way to operate ‘bullet trains’ from Delhi to Mumbai and Ludhiana to Kolkota in the first phase and Delhi to Chennai, Chennai to Kolkota and Kolkota to Goa in the second phase. The study would take five years. Already, two trains — Kanyakumari-Mumbai and Kanyakumari- Bangalore — were being operated between Nagercoil and Coimbatore through Kerala. Since people felt it was circuitous, tedious and took longer travelling time, the new train was introduced to run via Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Dindigul and Karur. Speed of 14 trains had been increased, Mr. Velu said. Regarding the coming railway budget, he pointed out that it would be people friendly. Working hoursAs requested by various organisations, the working hours in Kanyakumari railway station would be extended from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. to 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Development works were under way on an outlay of Rs.11.7 crore at Nagercoil junction. Work to the tune of Rs. 2 crore had been completed and work on an outlay of Rs.7.7 crore was being carried out in the Nagercoil-Tirunelveli section. It included improvement of platforms at Aralvoimozhi, Valliyoor and Panakudi stations. Besides, Rs.5.25 crore had been allotted for various works in the Nagercoil-Kanyakumari section, and Rs.1.26 crore in the Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram section, Mr. Velu said. V. Radhika Selvi, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, A.V. Bellarmine, MP, and Asokan Solomon, Municipal Chairman, spoke.
