Barnala urges police to be close to people

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Friday urged police personnel to be amicable and close to people.

Inaugurating the ninth All-India Police Band Competition at the Rajaratnam stadium here, he praised the efforts of the State police to make police-public friendship a movement. “The Tamil Nadu Police has carved a niche [for itself] in prevention and detection of crime and has a very brilliant record of service.”

Mr. Barnala explained how music played a major role in inspiring soldiers in the battlefield and how, in ancient India, musical instruments such as conch shells, horns, bugles and drums were used to send signals during battle.

The national competition is being held in Tamil Nadu for the first time.

The air was filled with different tunes of the colourful contingents when they marched past.
