Plea to start bank branch
Staff Reporter
PUDUKOTTAI: The Ponnamaravathy branch unit of the Communist Party of India has urged Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to initiate steps to open a branch of Indian Bank at Kuzhipirai, near Ponnamaravathy, without further delay.
A resolution adopted to this effect at the party’s meeting held here on Saturday said that although the branch was scheduled to be opened in December last, it did not materialise. The branch would facilitate the banking needs of investors, students and others in and around Kuzhipirai. Hence, Mr. Chidambaram must immediately intervene for starting the branch sanctioned by Reserve Bank.
Another resolution urged State Bank of India to post additional staff at its branch at Ponnamaravathy. The inadequate staff strength resulted in poor customer service.
Party’s Ponnamaravathy unit secretary A.L. Raj, who presided over the meeting, said customer service at the SBI branch would improve only if additional clerks were posted. The problem worsened when some of the existing staff proceeded on leave.
AITUC district secretary V. Singamuthu was among those who spoke.
