Rural job scheme to be launched in Karaikal district soon

Special Correspondent

KARAIKAL: The National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme will be launched by the Puducherry government in the district from April, Collector N. Vasanthakumar said on Saturday.

One person per family will be provided casual worker job for at least 100 days in a year and he/she will be paid wages fixed for agricultural workers. The Centre will contribute 90 per cent and the Puducherry government 10 per cent of the total wages paid to workers, he said at a press meet here.

The Collector said he would be the district programme coordinator for the scheme. A five-member committee, including a woman, would be set up to select jobless agricultural workers in the district.

Works, including creation of new ponds, tanks, desilting of irrigation channels and laying of small roads, would be taken up.
