CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Saturday distributed education scholarships to Muslim girls from disadvantaged backgrounds at the annual day celebrations of the Girls Education and Welfare Trust (GEWT).

The students were from Government Hobart School, Royapettah, and George Town Muslim Girls School. The Governor also honoured some of the Urdu poets – Majid Deobandi, Rahat Indori and Shabeena Adeeb – who participated in the All India Urdu Mushaira evening organised at the same venue.

The Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, said GEWT helped in furthering the education of poor girls who did not have the resources to study. He also presented a cheque to GEWT.

“High literacy”

Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna said the female literacy percentage among Muslims was higher in southern States than in the north. It was especially high in Tamil Nadu, thanks to the social development ideals of the Dravidian movement.

Call to join politics

She urged Muslim women to come into politics even as they focus on educational and financial empowerment.

Sharifa Azeez, president, GEWT, handed over a memorandum on behalf of the Trust. Qudsia Gandhi, Personnel and Administrative Reforms Secretary, and Syed Muneer Ahmed, co-chairman, GEWT, spoke.
