JALANDHAR: An embattled Haryana cleared the first hurdle when it beat a promising Gwalior 5-2 in Pool D league in the 55th Rakshak women’s National hockey championship here on Saturday. Mamta took on the mantle of a playmaker and created several chances and the forwards supplemented her efforts by pumping in early goals. Poonam Rani put Haryana up in the second minute on a move set up by Mamta before Monika Dahiya added one more in the 14th minute. Gwalior reduced the margin on the counterattack when Kavita Vidyarthi scored in the 15th minute. Haryana, however, slowed down the proceedings before Monika struck her second goal at the stroke of half-time. On resumption, it was Monika again who pounced on a loose ball and scooped it into the net. Savita made it 5-1 in the 59th minute before Lalremruati found a consolation goal four minutes from close. Gwalior has finished its league with three points from two matches, while Haryana will take on Orissa on Sunday, needing a win to make it to the semifinals. If Orissa beats Haryana by at least a 3-0 margin Gwalior can still make it. The results: Pool B: Punjab 3 (Deepika 43rd, 45th, 54th) beat Uttar Pradesh 2 (Kamini Mishra 12th, 33rd).
