New format for Federation Cup

NEW DELHI: The Federation Cup football tournament will have a new format this year.

It would be on the lines of FA Cup, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) stated on Saturday after an Executive Committee meeting.

The tournament will have a zonal level qualification round with the winner and runner-up from each of five zonal competitions qualifying for the preliminary round.

The zonal qualifiers will be joined by the Second Division League teams in a knock-out tournament in four groups. The group winners will qualify for the quarterfinal league.

The quarterfinal league will also have the 12 I-League teams. The 16 teams will be divided into four groups and the group winners will progress to the semifinals. — Special Correspondent
