Bopanna ready for the challenge

NEW DELHI: The opening of the grass courts for practice at the NSCI and the arrival of Rohan Bopanna added momentum to the preparation of the Indian team for the Davis Cup tie against Uzbekistan, scheduled from February 8 to 10 at the R.K. Khanna Stadium.

Uzbeks happy

The Uzbeks were also happy to find their feet on grass, on special grasscourt shoes bought from Moscow, as much as they were pleased with the arrival of their No.2 player, the 6’ 5” tall Farrukh Dustov, who lives in Italy.

The 27-year-old Bopanna was quite relaxed after practising in the afternoon on a gloomy day, and declared that he was ready to play on all three days during the tie and make a substantial contribution to the team’s cause.

“Coming from China, it feels warm here,” said Bopanna as he put the cold wave in the north in perspective, by comparing it to the tough experience he had in China. “It feels great to be playing on grass again, and am definitely looking forward to the tie.” — Special Correspondent
