Platform ticket counter

Most of the times the platform ticket counter at Salem Junction remains closed.

Enquiries reveal that platform tickets are issued at the regular counter issuing journey tickets. This causes a lot of inconvenience to passengers who want to buy journey tickets at the last minute. There should be separate counter for platform tickets.

Obscene shows

Recently I happened to travel from Salem old bus stand to Vysya College at Adhikarapatti in a private bus. I was shocked to see exhibition of vulgar and sexy dance sequences by scantily-dressed young group dancers accompanied by lewd songs on the television in the bus. Depiction of obscene scenes and vulgar and double entendre song sequences in films, dramas and on television in buses makes an impact on young impressionable minds leading to hideous crimes such as molestation and rape of women. Authorities concerned should take a strong action against the bus operators who show obscenities in their buses. T.N. Arthanari

Valparai roads

Many of the tourist places in the State have wide and two-way traffic roads with footpaths on both sides. But on the route from Pollachi to Valparai with more than 40 hairpin bends four-wheeler drivers find it difficult to negotiate vehicles. In some places in the hairpin bends fencing walls are broken. Valparai is a tourist centre and tourist places should have wide roads.

In Valparai town the road is narrow. The road from the Government High School to the new busstand is always crowded. There is no footpath for pedestrians and as a result accidents occur frequently. Authorities concerned should look into this and take steps to make Valparai an accident-free zone.

Elephant corridor

This has reference to the report ‘Land being acquired for elephant corridors’ (Jan. 28). In our obsession with our own self-interests, we have deprived the wild animals of their free movements in their own habitats and complain that these wild animals are straying into human habitats. The forest department’s decision to acquire lands for elephant corridors is bold and sympathetic and deserves support from all.

P. U .Krishnan,

Government quarters

The government servants quarters in Bhavanisagar were constructed at the time Bhavanisagar Dam was built i.e. during 1948-1955. Some of the buildings are in a dilapidated state. New buildings in one complex with all infrastructure should be constructed for the government servants.
