Bangalore: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Saturday finally admitted that there were five cases of cholera in the city and one in Bangalore Rural district. BBMP Chief Health Officer L.T. Gayathri said that five persons from city — two from Neelasandra area, one each from Jeevanahalli in Cox Town, Dooravaninagar and Epidemic Diseases Hospital (EDH) quarters, Old Madras Road, were suffering from cholera since January 28. The BBMP’s admission came following the results of culture test, which is considered as confirmatory test to detecting Vibrio cholerae bacteria that causes cholera. Earlier, the BBMP had refused to accept the results of “hanging-drop” test, claiming that it was only a presumptive test for detecting cholera even though the Epidemic Diseases Hospital, based on the results of hanging-drop test, had declared that there were five cases of cholera in the city. However, the BBMP termed as incorrect reports appearing in a section of the press about 63 cholera cases in the city.
