Frequent power cuts hit small units
Staff Reporter
Hosur: Frequent power cuts have become the order of the day in Hosur. Power supply, especially during the past one month, has been so erratic that many units owners have expressed apprehensions about their machines getting affected due to shutdowns. The worst affected are the ‘continuous process units’ like plastic and alloy, which require uninterrupted power supply.
A majority of medium and large-scale industries have resorted to captive generation to meet their power needs.
But the small and tiny industries find it difficult to invest Rs. 4 to Rs. 5 lakh on a generator as it meant a severe dent in their capital.
During the past one week alone, as many as 10 to 15 power cuts had been effected on a daily basis, badly affecting production, say industrialists.
Damage
But sources in Tamil Nadu Electricity Board point out that the power cuts were mainly due to frequent tripping in the grid caused by a mismatch between generation and demand. Moreover, since such tripping could cause heavy damage to high voltage equipment, load shedding was being effected.
This was just a passing phase and would stabilise soon, they added.
