PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Panchayat Movement has flayed the Local Administration Department for allegedly threatening to take action against village panchayat presidents for not convening grama sabhas on January 26. President of the Movement V.A. Vasudevaraju, in a memorandum submitted to the Lieutenant Governor, said it was unwarranted to initiate action against the heads of village panchayats. He urged the department to desist from such actions and “concentrate on delegation of powers to local bodies as guaranteed under the Constitution.” Any punitive action against village panchayat heads would weaken the panchayati raj administration, he said.
