Well done!: R.K. Krishna Kumar, Vice-Chairman, Tata Tea and the Indian Hotels Co. Ltd., congratulates gold medallist S. Venkadeswaran, at the graduation day function at Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam, on Sunday. —

SATHYAMANGALAM: Learning does not stop with graduation, especially in the fast-changing world.

To remain relevant in such a world, students must remain students in that they must keep learning, R. K. Krishna Kumar, Vice-Chairman, Tata Tea and The Indian Hotels Co. Ltd. has said.

“I have seen scientists and technologists rapidly becoming establishment figures, no longer seekers of knowledge. After receiving a degree they stop being students and become part of the established order. My advice to you is to be permanent students, constantly adjusting to change, exploring change and becoming the change itself,” he said.

He was at the eighth graduation day celebrations at the Bannari Amman Institute of Technology here on Sunday, to deliver the graduation day address.

He further said, “I say this because I sense the excitement and the transformational nature of all that is happening in different parts of the world, driven by new technology and new knowledge. Although I am an old man now, in a sense I have remained a student, and this has been my most rewarding experience.”

Mr. Kumar, who played a key role in Tata Tea acquiring Tetley, asked students not to get bogged down and carry the baggage of the past.

“As new citizens of the world I would urge you to put behind you the animosities and much of the mental furniture of the past. Country borders have no meaning any more. Nation states are receding in importance since now geography is history,” he said.

In the same breath he asked the students not to forget values and beliefs, though.

“For over four decades I have had the opportunity of interacting, reacting and sometimes confronting difficult challenges and crises both on the personal and official fronts. I was able to navigate through all these only by holding fast to my beliefs and with the firm conviction that fundamental values in life have great meaning regardless of the times in which we live. So as youngsters I am imploring you to absorb your fundamental values which will be guiding starts for your journey that begins today,” Mr. Kumar said.

Chairman of the Bannari Amman Group of Companies S. V. Balasubramaniam urged the students to be aware of the problems the environment faces in the name of development.

He asked the students to remain alive to issues of global warming, water shortage and nation building.

A total of 624 students received their degree certificates. S. Venkateswaran of B.Tech Textile Technology did the Institute proud by securing the Anna University gold medal.

In all, ten students secured University ranks. The Institute also presented Best Outgoing Student Awards.
