MADURAI: It was a day of ardent campaigning for hundreds of school students about environment protection under the banner of ‘Quest ’08,’ a cultural event organised by the third year students of Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) here on Saturday. In the form of structured events rallied around the theme of clean and safe environment, students from various schools in the district showcased their support for protecting environment and their opposition to pollution. The students’ campaign was kicked off by Vice-Chairman of Cognizant, Lakshmi Narayanan, who in his inaugural address, said that students from young age must be conscious of what was happening around their classrooms, schools and homes. “We need to have consciousness of how to deal with waste disposal and get rid of health hazards. Environment protection is something that should be practised in our everyday life,” said Mr. Narayanan, who also heads the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM). He also explained how the IT services major Cognizant was involved in creating environmental awareness among tribal students in Thane district of Maharashtra where the concern runs a school. “We focus on proper/systematic disposal of bio-degradable waste in that area. The awareness about clean technologies and green technologies is slowly receiving support,” he pointed out. Karumuttu T. Kannan, vice-chairman and correspondent of TCE, in his presidential address, said the college was organising the Quest’08 with focus on clean environment. “On the one side, we (India) are a technologically empowered nation. But our country’s name appears for the wrong things too and in a list where its name should not be seen. Some of them are pollution, child health and malnutrition,” he said. He referred to the garbage dumping at Avaniapuram, near the TCE, which, he said, posed threat to health and environmental “and the Corporation is yet to take action .”
