A new experience for music lovers in Mangalore

A classical and folk music programme was held as part of Karavali Utsav

MANGALORE: “Udayaraga,” a classical, folk and light classical music programme, was held as part of Karavali Utsav at Panambur beach here on Sunday at 5 a.m.

Yakshagana bhagavata Subramanaya Dhareshwar presented “Mooru murhiya roopage…” in Mohana from the popular “Choodamani prasanga”. Accompanied by artistes on the thavil and mrudanga, he presented “Ranganayaka …”

Upcoming Hindustani vocalist Mahalakshmi Shenoy Karkala began her concert with “Sajana aise…” in Ahir-Bhairav. She was at ease and her “saragam” was impressive. She moved on to dhrut (fast paced rendition) with “Mohe chchedona Giridhare…” leaving the audience spellbound. She ended her recital with Purandharadasa’s “Rama Rama Seetharama…” in Raga Parameshwari.

Flautist K. Muralidhar Udupi’s “Jagadoddharana…” in Raga Kapi was well received.

He presented “Payo, payoji maine…” and N. Ramani’s “Call of village in Darbari Kanada, besides presenting a composition in Raga Abhogi.

M. Srinath Marathe impressed the audience with his “Gananaayakam bhaje hum bhaje…” in Raga Rudrapriaya. His presentations in ragas “Malaya Maruta” and “Bilahari” were also impressive.

Singer Sheela Diwakar along with 60 of her students rendered light classical music. They rendered “Paduvana teerada Kannada naadina…” of Kadengodlu Shankar Bhat and two songs by Doddarange Gowda. She presented Nayakane vinaayakane…” and “Nillisadiru vanamaali…”

Earlier, Ramarao of Kodkal presented a Tulu folk song and a raagi milling song, among others.
