NEW DELHI: As a bird flu scare grips the Capital, medical experts have cautioned against consumption of raw and soft boiled eggs. According to these experts, eggs that are not cooked at high temperature are not just likely to carry strains of bird flu but also likely to cause typhoid and bacterial illnesses. In a statement issued here, Heart Care Foundation of India president K. K. Aggarwal said only full boiled eggs should be consumed to prevent bird flu. He said raw eggs with milk, half boiled eggs, or eggs that have a runny yolk should not be consumed. “People eating out should ascertain that all egg preparations have been cooked at high temperature. Normally it takes about three minutes to make a half boiled egg, five minutes for a medium boiled egg and 10 minutes for a full boiled egg,” he said. Dr. Aggarwal, however, clarified that cakes are safe to consume, because though they contain raw eggs, baking itself can kill the bacteria. “Cakes are baked at 200 degree Celsius and above, so the bacteria get killed. Half boiled eggs are usually present in preparations like Russian salads and mayonnaise,” he said. Dr. Aggarwal also suggested washing the eggs before using them: “Bacteria can be present in side the shell and even outside, therefore eggs should be washed before using and one should also wash hands after handling raw eggs.”
