KHAMMAM: Some 2,18,600 people mainly the members of the self help groups or their spouses were covered under the Janasri Bima Yojana in the district during 2007-2008, according to Shamshad Begum, Mahila Samkhya leader, here on Sunday. Addressing a meeting in the presence of a host of officials she explained that though the Bima Yojana was basically meant for the women members of the self-help groups, their husbands were covered in a big way as a majority of these who had met with accidental deaths happened to be men. She said only 1.58 lakh people were covered under the insurance scheme last year as against 48,000 in 2005-2006. In case of the accidental death, the claimant would be provided with Rs 5,000 within 24 hours of the accident. Rest of the amount would be paid in two to three months time. She explained that out of 1235 deaths that took place so far this year 1223 insurance claims were settled and only 12 claims were pending settlement. With a small premium of Rs 110 per annum the scheme had been giving maximum benefits to the SHG families in the district. The wards of those insured would be provided with a scholarship while studying in the high school or the industrial training institutes. The district could get Rs 1.97 crores towards these scholarships this year, she said. She urged Collector Sashibushan Kumar to provide a permanent office to the Samakhya.
