Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has strongly opposed the government decision to appoint committees to prepare guidelines for standard practice in the medical sector without consulting professional bodies on the issue. In a statement here on Sunday, IMA State president S. Alex Franklin and secretary R. Ramesh, while welcoming the need for standard treatment or practice guidelines for the medical sector in the State, expressed strong reservation on the government’s unilateral move. The IMA said that it could not accept the recommendations of committees comprising individuals nominated by the State government and that it could not be made mandatory. The statement wanted the State government to initiate a discussion with professional bodies such as the IMA which had more than 18,000 doctors from the government and private sector as its members. Such a move was necessary if the government wanted to bring in authentic and effective guidelines that would be accepted by all in the medical sector. Epidemic cellThe IMA has established a State-level epidemic cell in the wake of the recent developments. The cell planned to bring out an action plan to be implemented throughout the State. The activities would include vector control measures, sanitation, health education for public and local bodies, and treatment protocol for medical professionals and disease surveillance system. The IMA said it would mobilise doctors and paramedical staff if the situation so warrants. The local branches of the IMA have been asked to identify potential areas of mosquito breeding, the statement said.
