‘Mining banned near monuments’

BANGALORE: Unregulated mining in areas around monuments is beginning to pose the greatest threat to the preservation of cultural heritage, said C.B. Patil, Deputy Superintendent, Archaeological Survey of India on Saturday.

Speaking at a function organised by Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Mr. Patil said that the newest victim is the World Heritage site at Hampi. “The mining activities in Sandur and Jambunatha hills have the potential to cause damage to monuments at Hampi. This is why we have increased the radius of the area around Hampi where mining is banned,” he said.
