Patil urges Governor to convene meeting to discuss Cauvery issue

Bangalore: The former Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council H.K. Patil has urged Governor Rameshwar Thakur to convene an all-party meeting immediately, to finalise the stand of the Government on replying to the Supreme Court’s February 1 order on the Tamil Nadu Government’s petition pertaining to the Cauvery projects before it. In a memorandum to Mr. Thakur, the Congress leader said that the reply should be submitted within 15 days and urged him to convene the meeting before finalising the stand on the issues raised by the neighbouring State. Mr. Patil said that the State Government had taken a view that it should continue to wage a legal and constitutional battle to protect the rights of the farmers in the State. He said that apart from the State Government, both the houses of the State legislature had urged the Union Government not to gazette the award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, as it was detrimental to the interests of the State and its people. This was specially in regard to the drinking water needs of Bangalore and other towns in the Cauvery basin.
