Stop LTTE activities in Tamil Nadu: Chidambaram

Staff Reporter

Nagercoil: Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has appealed to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to take immediate steps to stop the activities of the LTTE in the State and those who support the outfit in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking on the occasion of the triple function on Saturday organised by Dr. Kumaradhas, who recently joined the Congress from the AIADMK, the Minister said that even as the late Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi sought to persuade the LTTE chief Prabhakaran to sign a treaty with the Sri Lankan Government for the benefit of Tamils living in Sri Lanka, the suicide bombers killed him.

Hence the recent activities of Sri Lankan Tamil militants were a matter of concern and these activities should not be allowed in the State in order to carry out illegal activities.

Development activities

The Government has recorded a nine per cent growth in all development activities for the last four years.

The United Progressive Government was striving hard for the formation of a ‘hunger-free society’ in the country. It has been implementing various development as well as welfare schemes for the benefit of the poor and down-trodden.

The Government has allotted the sum of Rs.2.25 thousand crore for farmers, Rs.18 crore for the benefit of 30 lakh women belonging to various self-help groups and several other schemes for students and other sections, said the Minister.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, M. Krishnaswamy, the Union Minister of State for Textiles, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, MLAs H. Vasanthakumar and N.Sunadaram and others spoke.
